De quoi s'agit-il?
________________________

L'étranger was published in 1942 in a very short print run; it was not subject to censorship as it was not deemed to be a dangerous work which might prejudice the French population against the German occupier.

What kind of work is it then?

A superficial reading of the novel concentrating on the lead up to a murder, followed by a second part consisting of a trial would be to reduce L'étranger to a very inconsistent and bad genre novel.

In fact L'étranger invites the reader to consider his relationship with society and the people around him, to evaluate the network of relationships which shape our lives and the meaning of life itself-if there is one.

The ambiguous relationship with the mother and grieving for her death (or not) pervades the narrative as does the relationship between the individual and authority.

The subtlety of the techniques employed by Camus to portray the silence of the oppressed, whether it be the French-Algerian working class friends of Meursault or the Arabs themselves-the literal silent majority, helps us to examine what a novel is.

L'étranger is no tidy work leading us to an inescapable conclusion; it is designed to make us think for ourselves and to consider the human condition hence its continuing popularity.

The novel is on the set text list for the WJEC and CCEA examination boards and is a popular choice by schools studying for the AQA and Edexcel boards.

La symphonie pastorale-André Gide-teaching resources

PURCHASE BUTTON AT BOTTOM

De quoi s'agit-il?
______________________

Gide's short nouvelles such as Isabelle, La porte étroite and La symphonie pastorale offer the reader timeless narratives in which the protagonists wrestle with their own angst, moral ambiguities and religious beliefs to attempt to achieve happiness.

A protestant pastor rescues blind girl Gertrude from an impoverished background and awakens her mind to language and spirituality in a remarkably short space of time.

Oblivious of the effect his relationship with the young woman is having on his wife and family, the pastor struggles increasingly with the moral decisions he has to make.

Seen through the prism of a civilisation a hundred years after this book was written and where amorality is widespread, this novel offers the basis for interesting debate on the way we lead our lives, our moral decisions and the devastating effects our own self interest can have on others.

Gide used these nouvelles to help him rationalise his own psychological and moral issues and they represent a meaningful and valuable route into the study of French literature.

De quoi s'agit-il?

When Parisian hairdresser Joseph Joffo decided to commit his childhood, wartime memories to paper in the early seventies he couldn't have had an inkling of the effect Un sac de billes would have. The book is now one of the most widely read French books by learners of the language as well as by French children themselves.

The Joffo family had taken refuge
from Russian oppression in France and felt safe in the bosom of the republic. The threat represented by the relatively sudden and unexpected arrival of the German army caused le père Joffo to put into practice the family escape plan which involved members of the family going off in groups to pursue their lives out of harm's way.

The novel is viewed through the eyes of the grown up Joseph's remembrance of his younger self and as such offers a poignant and amusing account of the many heart-stopping adventures which befall the two brothers.

Despite the savage nature of the fate which potentially awaited him, Joffo's writing is not recriminatory in any way and tends to emphasize the positive, concentrating on those who risked their lives to ensure that he and Maurice survived.

Apart from offering an insight into the privations of wartime the book shows the gradual change that living constantly in danger of betrayal can effect on a young mind.

De quoi s'agit-il?
______________________

Following the privations of the occupation France was just starting to get back into gear in 1954 when the young Françoise Sagan penned Bonjour Tristesse. The book was an immediate bestseller although it shocked to the core traditional Catholic bourgeois society.

Cécile, who has recently been reunited with her father after spending her formative years in a convent following her mother's death, is anxious to make up for lost time. She is looking forward to a blissfully hedonistic summer on the Côte d'Azur with the father she adores and his rather superficial but beautiful girlfriend Elsa.

Following the arrival of Anne, a friend of her deceased mother, who turns up at the father's invitation, Cécile quickly finds herself in a quandary; does she accept and embrace the different moral and social code that this classy new arrival represents or does she try to repel her?

We see the plot develop through the eyes of someone whose wobbly moral compass depends on the whims of her own inflated ego.

The novel was filmed in 1958 by Otto Preminger with the ill-fated Jean Seberg in the role of Cécile.

De quoi s'agit-il?

I see this short novel as a perfect foil to La haine a film studied by huge numbers of UK schools. Written by the 19 year old Faïza Guène, daughter of north African immigrants, the account of a year in one girl's life is presented in approachable chapters rich in detail about what it feels like to belong to a less-favoured group in society.

Rather than being big on plot, the book is more of a mood board with the colour moving from a cool blue to a warm yellow as the narrative comes to a conclusion. The sarcastic, cynical Doria of the first three quarters of the book references popular culture as her source of metaphor and simile and savages the education system as well as those who seek to help her and her mother. Her language is rich in verlan and is close to general spoken contemporary French with not a hint of the past historic.

As Doria's pain diminishes we see her becoming grudgingly accepting of what society is doing for her, coaxed along by some romantic interest. All in all a good text to study to help students empathise with modern urban society in France.

De quoi s'agit-il?

No et moi by Delphine de Vigan is an increasingly popular novel for learners of French. Written in an accessible level of language with no past historic it speaks to young people at several levels.

Narrated by Lou a young and gifted child two years ahead at school the novel revolves around her relationship with a rather older Sans Domicile Fixe (SDF) named No. Lou decides to use No as the subject of a class exposé she has to do and from this she, and we as observers, are brought into the world of people who end up living with no fixed abode.

The narrative is the more interesting because Lou describes situations and events which as adults we can comprehend but which she fails the see the significance of due to the relatively sheltered nature of her upbringing.

The book is proving popular not only at A2 but also a "trainer" book at AS level and even year 11 for ambitious learners.

There is a film based on the novel No et Moi directed by Zazou Breitmann. This complements the content of the novel very well giving an up to date picture of modern day France.

De quoi s'agit-il?
_______________________

Written in 1942 by Jean Bruller under the pen name of Vercors just as the Germans were beginning to show themselves in their true colours in occupied France this short work was distributed clandestinely.

With a demoralised population increasingly struggling to find the necessities of life collaboration was very prevalent; this narrative was written with the aim of encouraging the population to resist mentally and spiritually against the occupier even when he showed himself to be reasonable and rational.

The old man and his grand daughter who are treated to the world view of a young German officer planted infront of the fire demonstrates the changing state of mind of the latter as he realizes what is really happening in occupied France.

As von Ebrennac the German officer comes to the realisation that the army is there for one reason only the attitude of the young woman also changes, almost imperceptibly.

Despite the apparent lack of action Le silence de la mer has been filmed a number of times yet it is the book that is the most powerful document with its powerful poetic images and spiritual scale.

De quoi s'agit-il?
____________________

Christiane Rochefort's highly ironic and entertaining novel which appeared as the so called "Trente Glorieuses" period of rapid growth was going on, rails against the materialism fuelling this development.

The protagonist Jo, who is also the narrator, spends her early life looking after the latest new baby that the parents have brought into the world in order to benefit from the financial incentives being awarded to encourage the population to grow.

Despite enjoying her school work Jo doesn't get chance to follow this through and she becomes sexualised very young as she seeks affection from the first person to show an interest in her.

There are many amusing episodes in the book although the feeling we are left with is one of upset at seeing a young person wasting her opportunities and following inexorably in the parental footsteps.

De quoi s'agit-il?
___________________________

Colette was a prolific author whose first work was written at the turn of the 19th century under the tutelage of her first husband. The author lived a life as worthy of note as many of the more risqué stars of today and was never far from courting controversy.

Le blé en herbe was a very controversial work in its day due to the overtly sexual nature of the content of the novel.

Phil and Vinca's families have been sharing a holiday home in Britanny since the children were very young. As they reach adolescence Phil and Vinca are becoming attracted to each other and both see a certain inevitability in their eventual marriage. However, teenage hormones being what they are the summer in question is full of challenge for both young people following the arrival of the exotic Madame Dalleray at the villa near the village.

The urgency of teenage feelings is represented in rich, lyrical language overseen by an ominiscient narrator who never tires of describing the emerging physicality of both boy and girl. The natural setting serves as an appropriate backdrop to this enticing love story.

The novel is on the WJEC specification set text list and is deserving of study.

De quoi s'agit-il?
__________________________

Set in the Alps in the mid 50's in a small hamlet at the foot of the mountains this novel is a wonderful study of the rapport between two brothers-one a hardworking ex-mountain guide who is now mentally disabled following an accident and his younger brother who is a lazy chancer.

The younger brother is anxious to sell up and abandon the rugged mountain farming life something which his brother is dead against. The book demonstrates the rising poverty in the countryside at the height of the rural exodus when peasants deserted their farms for the cities in droves.

Everything changes when an aeroplane en route from India to London crashes high up on the mountain top and an expedition is sent up to bring down the mail. We witness an epic struggle between man and mountain and man and man as the tension ramps up.

There is plenty to discuss in terms of plot, character and background in this novel which is still very popular in France. Although not currently on any set text it would beautifully complement a regional study of the Alps.

De quoi s'agit-il?
_____________________

This short very humanistic novel about a young boy of Jewish background who befriends a muslim shopkeeper traces the relationship between the two as it develops over time.

Although short, this magical work is engaging and is deceptively deep in the philosphical issues about which it encourages discussion.

A profoundly optimistic work the work encourages us to look at the positives which link multicultural groups together rather than the negatives which might separate them. This is not laboured but does form an intrinsic part of the structure of the novel where the whole nature of our identity as a human being is questioned.

This book is a very worthy title to study and a film of the work has been made recently starring Omar Sharif.

Ils partiront dans l'ivresse-Lucie Aubrac-teaching resources

PURCHASE BUTTON BELOW

De quoi s'agit-il?
______________________

This account of Lucie Aubrac and her husband Raymond's resistance activities during the war embraces a period of about a year and is in journal format.

Through its pages we learn how the resistance operated in occupied Lyon under the iron thumb of Gestapo officer Klaus Barbie.

Lucie, a history teacher, continues to work as she helps organise resistance activities. We learn the ruses employed to release fellow members when they are captured which results in several exciting action sequences.

The main episode concerns Raymond's capture alongside Max (Jean Moulin) and his wife's devious efforts to effect his release during a prison transfer.

For most of the length of the book Lucie is pregnant so much of the action is overshadowed by her worry for the unborn child. There is thus a good balance of action and feelings which makes for a fascinating read.

There is some controversy about how true an account of events the book actually is which only makes studying it more interesting. The Claude Berri film Lucie Aubrac covers the main action but little of the more interesting background which makes Ils partiront dans l'ivresse such a fascinating document.

This collection of short stories is on the set text list for the WJEC and is popular with teachers of other boards. Boule de suif, the short story which gives its name to the collection still has the power to make the reader fume with moral indignation and the subsequent shorter tales with their ambiguously written "patriotic" tales challenge us to ask ourselves what we would have done in similar circumstances.

The vocabulary, summary and questions refer to all the stories in the collection whilst the other exercises refer exclusively to Boule de suif.

The France 3 collection of Maupassant stories includes Boule de Suif albeit setting it in summertime rather than in the winter which deprives the narrative of much of its atmosphere.

Thérèse Desqueyroux-teaching resources

De quoi s'agit-il?
______________________

Thérèse Desqueyroux is an extremely interesting novel written by François Mauriac in 1928 nearly 20 years before woman gained the vote. In an age when we were are used to increasing (although incomplete) equality between the sexes, this novel comes as something of a shock to the system with women losing their identity and having less clout than the family servant.

Set in, as the author puts it, the back of beyond, in the Landes in South West France, the novel traces an episode in the life of the eponymous heroine.

At the start of the novel Thérèse has had her case for attempted murder of her husband by poisoning quashed. Two thirds of the novel involve her going through the events in her life that lead up to the realisation by doctors that something criminal has been going on.

The events include much detail around the role of women in a society that had probably changed little in hundreds of years with giving birth being considered the primary function of a woman, preserving the family name and if one was rich helping to keep wealth in the family.

The novel is a potent mix of plot, background, point of view and intrigue and thoroughly to be recommended for A level study.

De quoi s'agit-il?
_____________________________

With money and people's attitude towards it having been very much in the public eye over the last few years, it has always been pretty high on people's agenda and L'avare reminds us of its corrupting effect.

Harpagon loves having money and keeping hold of it; he's not too worried about doing anything with it and deplores his own children wasting it. He has plans to marry again to a young woman who unfortunately his own son has his eyes on.

So a typical Molière plot with the highly exaggerated main character, the love sick young people and spirited servants.

No need to worry about the 17th century French, the language is very approachable particularly with the alevelfrench.com materials to help out.

Le petit prince-teaching resources

De quoi s'agit-il?
_____________________________

Antoine de St Exupéry seamlessly combined his career as a pilot on long distance routes between France and Africa and in South America with his more successful career as a writer. After flying sorties for the air force as the German army invaded in 1940, St Exupéry left for New York where after writing Pilote de Guerre recounting his experiences over northern France, he was persuaded to write a children's tale.

Armed with a paintbox with which he paints his own illustrations St Ex comes up with Le petit prince which at least partly helps him deal with his current preoccupations, making up with his delectable South American wife Consuelo and getting himself back in the air. Published initially in the US in a luxurious version for children the book is published after the author's tragic death in France.

Although apparently aimed at children, the emotional depth of the short work which also takes a swipe at the materialism and self obsession of modern society, can also be read as a work of spiritual renewal by "les grandes personnes".

Oscar et la dame rose-teaching resources

Oscar et la dame rose, Eric Emmanuel-Schmitt, a level French, literature, IB literature

Oscar et la dame rose

De quoi s'agit-il?

Although ostensibly about the nature of faith and how to approach death, this very short book is also strangely life-affirming. Eric Emmanuel-Schmitt's 10 year old protagonist, Oscar, realizes that he is going to succumb to his leucaemia as he undergoes treatment in a children's hospital. However, the fantastic imaginative support he receives from his "dame rose" hospital visitor Mamie-Rose enables him to climb onto a spiritual plain from which he is able to make the transition from terrified child to mentally prepared adult. The text is essentially composed of fourteen letters written by Oscar, initially a non-believer, to God and analysing his last days. The letters, at once, dramatic, amusing and heart-wrenching are utterly engaging. Study of this book would be an excellent individual activity for gifted and talented children at GCSE, a suitable "transition" text or piece of individual study to be presented in the oral examination.

Stupeur et tremblements-Amélie Nothomb

stupeur et tremblements, amelie nothomb, essay, summary, resources

De quoi s'agit-il?

Written in the early 90's when the Japanese reputation for business prowess was at its height, the young Amélie Nothomb began work for a large firm in Tokyo. Overawed by her surroundings and particularly by her new manager, Fubuki, Amélie's idealized preconceptions of what her working life will be like are soon dashed. She recalls her early optimism, the market study which is her undoing and subsequent humiliation as her aspirations are trodden beneath the conventions of the Japanese business environment.

Written in an amusing style, Stupeur et tremblements is an excellent, short novel to introduce students to a more international perspective, appropriate for the business world today. It is also useful to examine a culture which does not bow to western sensibilities.

IB tasks have been added to make the resources relevant for a world-wide audience.

De quoi s'agit-il?

Just when you thought it wasn't possible to come up with another original take on the consequences of the German occupation on the Jewish population of France, along comes this short, powerful novel in which the author tries to piece together his own parents' passionate and tragic past. The narrator is well aware that in some way he doesn't match up to his father's expectations of him; at the same time, having discovered a ragged toy dog in the spare room, he has invented an imaginary brother with whom he can share his lonely childhood. Confiding in his parents' friend, Louise, a physiotherapist who helps him cope with his many allergies and other weaknesses, the narrator slowly becomes aware that he and the rest of his family are living a lie.

At the same time as gaining a good insight into the terror and privations of the time, one is drawn into a story of jealousy, passion and coming of age.

Teachers will appreciate the fact that the language is straightforward, that chapters are short and that there is plenty to discuss around the motivation of characters.
