Amélie (Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
This film was Jeunet's first international hit. With its quirky story telling, aesthetically beautiful direction and the impeccable cast of actors, it portrayed a Paris which has long disappeared.
Amélie is a lonely, introverted girl in search of love; she can only act by trying to do good deeds for other people; as far as her own future goes, she is powerless.
We are constantly surprised by the visual effects, seduced by the charm of the colouring and entranced by Jeunet's wizardry; untimately the final scenes turn the film into a feel good film of the first order.
On the back of this film Jeunet received the backing of Warner to produce the much larger scale Un long dimanche de fiançailles which we also cover (see the menu to the left).
